About Manawa
“Developing our health future together”
Manawa is the exciting new health research and education facility in the new Te Papa Hauora/Health Precinct. Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB), University of Canterbury (UC) and Ara Institute of Canterbury share the facility to encourage greater collaboration and innovation.
Each year, 1800 Ara nursing, midwifery and medical imaging students are trained at Manawa. CDHB uses the facility to provide specialist training for their health professionals and UC brings in top health researchers.
Manawa has enabled Ara to build on existing health sector relationships and expand its nursing and allied health programmes, taking full advantage of innovations in health and education. Students have access to high tech simulation environments and facilities and work alongside professionals and potential employers.
With Manawa, Ara leads New Zealand in the provision of nursing and allied health training.
Manawa means heart, patience or breath in Te Reo Maori and was gifted to the partnership as a reflection of the proverb “Manawa whenua, manawa tangata”, which describes the intimate connection between human health and the health of our environment.
The aging population and healthcare workforce creates a demand for high-quality graduate health professionals, and by working together we can ensure our graduates are work ready and highly competent to serve all the communities of Canterbury.
