Talent on tap from Christchurch to Broadway

Christchurch born and bred, Phoebe Finnie wanted to go to the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA) at Ara Institute of Canterbury ever since she could remember.

But never in her wildest dreams did she think her passion for performing would end up winning her the opportunity to head to Broadway.

“I’ve wanted to go to New York ever since I could remember, and I’ve never been able to go, so this is just huge. I don’t think it’s even sunk in yet,” she said.

Finnie took out the big prize at the 2024 New Zealand Dance Awards with a show-stopping performance of Cornet Man from the musical Funny Girl.

She nabbed an all-expenses trip to New York including Broadway shows and Broadway training, as well as flights and accommodation.

As she nears the end of her Bachelor of Music Theatre, her childhood dream of heading to Broadway is a step closer and she's daring to hope New York will open doors for her.

“I’ve always been studying, from kindy all the way through to now. I really don’t know what’s next and it’s scary and exciting at the same time. Having this opportunity to go to New York has enabled me to keep working towards something and keep building new relationships,” she said.

There was no question for Phoebe that she would one day end up at NASDA and she has no regrets.

“I’ve been performing ever since I was basically in the womb. I’ve known for a long time that this is what I want to do, performing is all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

“NASDA has given us so many opportunities within these past three years to enhance our skills, learn and develop our craft more. I’ve matured so much over the last few years. This place really pushes you to grow as an individual and performer,” she said.

She'd recommend any ‘music theatre kid’ like her sign up without hesitation.

“We do a huge variety of things at NASDA. We’re constantly moving, doing things and learning different kinds of dance, jazz, contemporary and tap.”

Tap, Finnie said, is her hands-down favourite. “I am a huge tapper!”

“I am so grateful for NASDA. I’ve been able to surround myself with positive energy and I’m so grateful for being here.”

NASDA wrapped up its 2024 academic year on November 18 with the highly anticipated Luminate Gala to celebrate its 30th birthday.

However, many students will be back at Ara City campus to begin rehearsals for Christmas in the Park which is also celebrating its 30th birthday this year.
