Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Level 3
Get hands-on skills for a career in mechanical engineering.
This highly practical programme covers welding, fabrication, machining, fitting and maintenance, along with embedded safety, drawing, trade theory, calculations and communication skills. It also includes a series of trade-relevant engineering projects. Please note: in order to undertake this programme you must be physically able to work safely in an industry-related work environment.
Please note: the fees for this programme will increase for enrolments starting in Semester 1, 2025. Students starting this programme in Semester 2, 2024 won’t be affected by the fee increase, even though the programme continues into 2025.

The programme has open entry. English Language requirements apply.
NCEA Level 1 with 10 credits in Numeracy (algebra, trigonometry, measurement recommended) and 10 credits in Literacy, OR
- Be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills
What if English is not my first Language?
If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.
- Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
- If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.
- If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country.
- IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
- What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance?
- You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills.
For domestic applicants for whom English is not their first language evidence of language competency may be required
IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
- or completed NZ Certificate in English Language L3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic
- or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined in Rule 18 and Appendix 2 of the NZQF Programme and Accreditation Rules 2013

With this qualification you'll be able to work (under limited supervision) as an operator or trade assistant in your area of specialisation, in the mechanical engineering, steel construction, mechanical building services, manufacturing, or fabrication industries.
Study pathways
This qualification can lead to Level 4 programmes in mechanical engineering, engineering fabrication and mechanical building services. Other options may include a diploma or degree in engineering in civil, electrical or mechanical disciplines.
