The purpose of Emergency Assistance is to support students whose continued study would be threatened by unanticipated financial circumstances. Assistance will be provided via vouchers and/or Metro top up (up to $100).
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this Emergency Assistance you must meet all of the following conditions:
- Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident at the time of application.
- Be currently experiencing unanticipated financial hardship (you will be required to show evidence of this via bank balances at the time of submitting your application).
Please note: Applications won't be considered before the programme start date or within 7 days of study end date. Applicants don't have an automatic right of entitlement to assistance, and Ara reserves the right to decline the application.
If you’re an Ara, UC or Lincoln staff member and you’ve received funding to pay a proportion of your Ara course fees or you’re studying a free course at Ara, you’re not eligible to apply for any Financial Assistance.

How long does it take?
- Provided that you bring in a completed application form with bank balance evidence, it will be evaluated by a manager and processed immediately.
- Emergency Assistance will not be considered if all requested documentation is not provided at the time of submitting this application.
How to Apply
- Complete the application form in full.
- Provide evidence of all up-to-date bank balances (this could be accessed by your phone app to show to a student advisor at your campus). We need this to determine your current financial position.
- Please bring the application and bank balance evidence to a Student Advisor at your campus, or email it to: learnersupport@ara.ac.nz
