Kathryn Fraser was a much-loved Ara colleague who tragically passed away as the result of an accident on her way to Ara in 2023. Kathryn touched many people’s lives while she worked at Ara. She had many connections throughout the institute and the Ara community, assisting both colleagues and learners in the work she did.

This scholarship aims to honour Kathryn’s legacy by promoting equity in education and helping to eliminate barriers to accessing tertiary education for students.

$10,000 annually will be split between four domestic or international learners ($2500 per student) for three years from 2025 to 2028.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • Be enrolled full-time or part-time* in a Level 3 or above programme at an Ara campus in Christchurch, Timaru, Ashburton or Oamaru
  • Be able to demonstrate how your experiences with challenges (of any sort, for example financial, ethnicity or learning difficulties) impact on achieving your educational goals

*Learners studying full-time will receive the full $2500 while learners studying part-time will receive a proportion of the $2500, equal to the level of their part-time enrolment.

How to Apply

You must provide:

  • Please submit an application form (click on the application form button below)
  • A personal statement (no more than one page) that outlines: what led you to your chosen area of study; the impacts of the equity challenges you face during your studies; where you see yourself once you complete your studies
  • Two character references
